Blocker/Pivot/Jammer - All Stars

I have been a skater with OCCRD since 2008. I have worn many hats ranging from jammer, board member, co-owner, blocker and unofficial team medic but my favorite title has always been and will always be ‘best hugger.’

Likes: my crazy OCCRD family, being a momma of two great boys, Jiu jitsu

Dislikes: negativity, dead fish handshakes, over ripe bananas

Q&A with Ophelia Fracture

// Interview by: Steph Infection

Tell me a bit about your background.

I am a mother of two fabulous boys and have two cats, two dogs, and a wonderful partner. I have been a paramedic for 23 years. I love EMS and recently have had the pleasure of becoming the Director of Johnson County Ambulance Service.

How did you gravitate toward roller derby?

I skated at the local roller rink (Roll on America, Leominster MA) as a kid and even made my own pom-poms for my skates. In 2008, I saw my friend on the cover of the local paper skating with the newly formed team Old Capitol City Roller Derby. I jumped at the opportunity and haven’t looked back.

Team sports aren't as prevalent in adulthood as they are in childhood and adolescence. Did you participate in a sport prior to derby? What is it like to experience team training as an adult?

I have competed in field hockey, cross country running and Jiu-Jitsu. I like training as an adult but the scheduling is more challenging when you add full-time work and family into the mix. It’s important to carve out some time for yourself.

What do you enjoy most about roller derby?

The camaraderie . I have gained lifelong friends through roller derby. Derby also gives me a great sense of strength and self-accomplishment.

Is there a roller derby moment that you particularly cherish or come back to?

Early on, our team had a victory over a team called the Unholy Rollers out of Madison, WI. We were never expected to win and we were just as surprised as the spectators. We were so proud and excited. The pictures from that game still bring me joy.

What are your interests outside of derby?

I love hanging out with my family, gardening, going to movies, traveling and eating tasty food. Also, my oldest son plays junior roller derby so I love supporting him and seeing him exceed my wildest athletic aspirations. Cheer on Barf Maul if you ever watch the IC Bruisers play. They are the only junior roller derby league in the nation that is completely free for a skater to join.

Do you have any pre-game rituals or good luck charms?

I used to have brand new tights before each bout… Thankfully I have outgrown that one.

What is your favorite animal, and why?

I love otters. They are fun, fast and playful. They also like to hold hands with their loved ones.

Let's say cell phones don't exist. Your friends are looking for you on a Saturday. Where might they find you and what would you be doing?

If the weather is warm, my friends know that they will find me playing in the dirt in my garden.

What is the last thing you binged?

I recently watched Russian doll and loved it!! Natasha Lyonne is great!

If someone came to you expressing an interest in joining OCCRD, what advice would you give them?

Do it! It’s great exercise, it's empowering and you’ll meet an amazing group of goofballs!
